UPS Battery Life Estimator

Enter where your UPS lives and how often it works. The estimator combines heat aging and discharge wear to predict when the battery will need replacing.

Measure near the UPS, not the thermostat. Cabinets run warmer.

How the estimate is calculated

Two independent things wear out a UPS battery, and the estimator adds them together:

  1. Calendar (float) aging, which happens every day the battery sits on charge. For VRLA batteries we start from 75% of the design life at 25 °C (77 °F) and halve it for every 8.3 °C (15 °F) above that, a middle value of the 8 to 10 °C rule used across the industry. Cooler temperatures are not credited with longer life, because capacity and charging behavior suffer in the cold.
  2. Cycle wear, from each discharge. A VRLA battery tolerates on the order of hundreds of deep cycles but many more shallow ones; LiFePO4 tolerates thousands.
Life (years) = 1 / ( 1 / calendar life at temperature + discharges per year / cycle life )

Worked example: the closet versus the desk

Same UPS, same 5-year battery, six moderate outages a year:

Model output for a 5-year design life VRLA battery
LocationAvg. temperatureEstimated life
Open desk, air-conditioned office75 °F (24 °C)about 3.5 years
Under a desk beside a gaming PC exhaust86 °F (30 °C)about 2.4 years
Closed network closet, no ventilation95 °F (35 °C)about 1.6 years

The cheapest battery upgrade is a cooler spot

Moving a UPS from a hot closet to an open shelf can roughly double the battery's life for free. Before paying extra for a long-life battery, measure the temperature where the UPS actually sits.

This is a planning model, not a guarantee. Battery quality, charger design and how long a battery sat on a shelf before you bought it all change real results. Use the UPS's self-test and runtime readings to confirm; see when to replace a UPS battery.

Frequently asked questions

How long does a UPS battery last?

Sealed lead-acid batteries in consumer UPS units typically last 3 to 5 years at room temperature, often less in warm locations. LiFePO4 batteries used in newer lithium UPS models are commonly rated for 8 to 10 years or more.

Why does temperature matter so much?

Battery aging is a chemical process that speeds up with heat. For VRLA batteries, a common industry rule is that service life halves for roughly every 8 to 10 °C (about 15 to 18 °F) above 25 °C. A battery that lasts 4 years at 77 °F may last about 2 years at 95 °F.

Do power outages wear out a UPS battery?

Each discharge consumes some life, and deep discharges consume much more than shallow ones. A few outages a year barely matter; dozens of deep discharges a year can dominate battery wear, especially for lead-acid.

What does design life on a battery mean?

Design life is the manufacturer's expected float life under ideal conditions, usually 25 °C and correct charging. Real service life is typically shorter; we use about 75% of design life as a realistic baseline for VRLA.
