How to read your UPS before you guess
- Check the lights or display. An LCD often shows an explicit code or icon. LED units use combinations of "on line", "on battery", "overload" and "replace battery" lights.
- Check whether wall power is present. Plug a lamp into another outlet on the same circuit.
- Note the timing. Count beeps over 30 seconds, and note whether they started during an outage, a self-test or at power-on.
- Check the software log. If the UPS is connected by USB, its software records events with reasons. See UPS software.
| Indicator | Usual meaning |
|---|---|
| Green "on line" or "power on" | Running from wall power, battery charging or full |
| Yellow or amber "on battery" | Supplying load from battery |
| Red "overload" | Load exceeds rating; reduce load |
| Red "replace battery" or battery icon | Battery failed self-test or is disconnected |
| Red "site wiring fault" or "building wiring" | Ground missing or hot/neutral reversed at outlet |
| "AVR", "boost" or "trim" | Correcting low or high voltage without using battery |
Stop if there is heat or a smell
A rotten-egg or burning smell, a hot case or a bulging battery means a battery is failing dangerously. Unplug the UPS from the wall, switch it off, and see UPS hot or burning smell and swollen UPS battery.
Frequently asked questions
Why is my UPS beeping when the power is on?
The most common reasons are a failed battery self-test, an overload, a wiring fault at the outlet, or input voltage that is out of range even though lights look normal. Check the indicator lights or display first; they narrow it down faster than the beep alone.
How do I stop my UPS from beeping?
Most units have a mute function, usually a short press of the power button or a dedicated mute button, and many let you disable alarms in their software. Silencing does not fix the cause, so read what the alarm means first.
Is a beeping UPS dangerous?
Usually not; it is a warning. Treat it as urgent if the beeping comes with heat, a sulfur or burning smell, or a swollen case. In that case unplug the UPS from the wall, switch it off and do not use it until inspected.
Does a continuous beep always mean overload?
On most units a constant tone means overload or an internal fault. If the tone continues after you unplug every device, the fault is in the UPS itself and it should be serviced or replaced.
